UNIT 6: Understanding power

Hello
This unit talks about understanding power, this will involve three aspects that are indispensable to know, these parts are: the articles, it incorporate the definite article, indefinite articles and No article. Then there are the clauses with whatever, whoever and whenever. Besides in this unit I will talk about connectors of time and contrast.

I will write about when we need to use the articles, because there are rules people need to follow. Also I’ll write about the correct context to use the clauses and connectors too.

Contents in this unit:
- Articles
- Clauses with whatever, whoever, whenever
- Connectors
- New vocabulary

  • In class

The first activity we did in class was a pair discussion about some places and what we knew about them according to the sentences given, then we listened the record to see if the things we assumed were ok or not.

The next picture shows us a fill, with new words according to power and how these words can be used.

These phrases has their meaning, and I consider that is a useful vocabulary in many careers and real situations.

The Articles: This type of grammar is used in different statements, this articles are: a, an, the, no article. However it has many rules too. For example:

We don’t need to use: “a or an” with possessive pronouns, demonstratives or cardinal numbers. Also we use “the” for rivers, ocean and cardinal points.

On the other hand there is the “No article”, it means that there are specific words and situations that we don’t need to use some of the articles a, an or the. The most common is when we generalize a group with the same situation, like People, it involves many kinds of cultures, and more. Another example is when we are talking about cities or towns, we don’t need to use any kind of article, but with the exception of: The United States, The Netherlands, The Philippines. Although there are more examples we need to understand.

Some practice that we did in class with the articles was:

In that example, it can be appreciated  in context how to use the articles.

Other activity we did in class was with the vocabulary of fashions and fads. Some classmate and I recreated a product to sell it in class, describing the product with the new vocabulary. It was so helpful.

The next picture will show the clauses with What, Who and whenever.

The practice was easy, actually this is a nice topic and easy to understand.

Connectors of time and contrast:

These connectors are important, because it help us to continuous with a logical structure in our writing and oral productions.
  • Out class and
  • Grammar

To recover these topics, I looked and found some extra information about these topics, the correct way to use them, rules and examples.

Some of the info I found about articles was:

For see all the information, you just have to visit the next web page, I will include the link for you:  http://esl.fis.edu/grammar/rules/article.htm.

In the next link there is practice about it: http://www.englisch-hilfen.de/en/exercises_list/artikel.htm

The clauses are use when we are saying something but we really don’t care.
For example:

To make a review of connectors, I looked a presentation on internet that talk about it:

  • Reflection

These topics are very functional; the things we saw on this unit are basics but important, it will show how much you know. And it is helpful because this words and grammar are used every single day in our oral and writing production.

I will write about the grammar that is desirable to know in this occasion. I’ll write about the first conditional that, is related to the future tense, where it can be used in many situation. Additionally I will add some of my homework to show the use of these topics.

In this Unit I am going to talk about
- Conditionals
- Sentence Adverbials

There are four kind of conditionals:

Conditional 0, it is used in present (in the condition and in the result ). For example: If you like him, talk him!
First conditional, it is used in future. For example: If you study, you will pass the test.
Second conditional, it is used for unreal situations. For example: If you won the lottery, you would buy a car.
Third conditional: it is used for unreal situation in past. For example: If you had arrived before for the test, you would have finished by now.

These conditionals are important for the role it represents.

Sentence adverbial
This topic is essential, principally when we are writing, it help us to set parameters, which show us where this words can be used, for example in the beginning or separated by a comma.

The next practice is for identify the words and its context.

I will add a Song! Because on it we could see, the use of the second conditional. And it show us that this is a topic that can be used everywhere.

The name of the song is “IF I WERE A BOY” by Beyoncé. Enjoy it

There are others songs that use the 3rd conditional for example:

  •     Reflection

Personally I like this topic, if I had more time, I would practice more. Because is really important we know this, because it is use a lot in different situations.

UNIT 4: Moving Forward

Hi!!

Today I am going to study about Unit 4: Moving forward, it’ll include the future probability, new vocabulary like arrangements, and the future forms.
I will write about the grammar, that is convenient in our daily use when we want to express something that we think it will happen on the future, also I’ll write about vocabulary that can be used in an I’ll try to put examples of what I did in class, and some of my homework, to show the use of these topics. I hope to show all the possible things, to have a clear idea of this.

During this exposition I’m going to talk about:
- Future probability
- New vocabulary
- Future forms
  • In class

This was an activity we did in class, for discuss about how much we knew, this activity was cool, because we could talk and show the things we knew about superheroes. Then we check our answers.

Future probability.
This topic is used when we want to talk about when we think something will happen in the future, when we totally are sure that something will definitely happen, maybe happen or it it is impossible to happen. The next phrases are used according to the probability:

There are different sayings. For example:

This phrase mean that you will do something or that something will definitely happen: “Are bound to”

The next three phrases means that there are a big chance that something will happen: “Fairy good chance”, “Destine possibility”, “There is every likelihood”

The next saying means that there is a little possibility that something happen: “It is doubtful that”, “There is a very little chance”, “The odds are against”

And of course there are some terminologies to express that something won´t happen like: “No chance of”, “Don’t stand a chance”

Vocabulary: arrangements

This vocabulary is important because is used in different situations, which we can use daily.

Future Forms:
In this part there are three tenses we normally use.
The simple future: in this is commonly use: “will”, it is used when I take a prompt decision or when there are evidence that something will happen. On the other hand there is the use of “going to”, it is used when you had already planned something and it will happen.

Future continuous: it will express that something will happening in a period.

Future perfect: it will be used for something that will be finished before a time in the future.

After that, we did some practice about the use of will, future continuous and future perfect.  It because is important that we can recognize when we need to use each them.

  •          Out  of class
  •     Grammar
For this part I tried to improve the vocabulary and I practiced using it in different context, for example:

It is a vocabulary that we use every day and you must know what it means.

I looked some information about future tense, so I found a cool page that has the enough information, examples and more. Then I will put a link where you can play a game and practice at the same time.

Link with the information:

In the next link you’ll find a game where you can practice the future tense, it is funny and with examples that will help us.

Also, there are a video that can explain us better how it works

  •      Reflection

Like I had been told you before, these topics and the others are very important.. Now, with future tenses we can organize plans, predict something.

For example this unit is about moving forward, and let me told you that two of my dreams are: study and work abroad, so I will travel to make my dreams come true. There is a strong possibility that I’ll go and realize my practice abroad with one of the programs that ULACIT offer.

Like you can see, I’m using future terms, for say something that in whichever moment someone can ask me. That’s the reason why we need to know the correct vocabulary and the correct tense, to express what we want.

1- Emagazine: Culture and places around the world.

This topic about culture is so wide. In each continent there are different cultures, but is important mentioned that nowadays, due to all the technological culturalization a lot of people in the XXI century have been forgetting all this customs and tradition, not only that, people are taking other countries customs to their daily use and coupling them to their country and culture. However, for understand in the correct way this theme; first, there must be a clear concept of “culture”, so it will define culture as the whole of actions, procedures and ways of thinking of the people in a determinate population. There are hundreds of cultures all around the world and millions of people who follow a determinate practice. In this essay, I am going to write about three continents that have different cultures in distinctive places as India, Rome and Mexico.

Let’s talk about culture in America, Maya’s and Incas’ culture. Where these cultures are from? What are the principal characteristics? The Maya’s culture came from Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and principally from Mexico. This is one of the older cultures. This culture is characterized for all its architecture. Have you ever heard about Tikal, Chichén Itzá, and Copán? Well these incredible cities were made by them in Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras respectively. Can you imagine how this people built these structures without all the technology we have today? The synchronization, the intelligence and the patient they must have were absolutely amazing, in my opinion. Some customs on this culture were: the way of how people on that time used their hair. They used to make nose perforation to wear jewels. In addition, they celebrate the Hetzmek ceremony; it consisted in a ritual of straddle a baby in the left hip of a godparent, this custom people still do it. On the other hand, there is the Incas’ culture, characterized for be leader of the biggest empire, their social structure was rigid because they had established the society in different parts. Their architecture was functional and creative as a result of the used of natural reliefs as Machu Picchu, well, nobody can blame them. Then, their religious was based on the sun. Although they also were polytheists, they believed in different gods.

Now, the culture of Europe is rich in different aspects like: architecture, literature and sculpture. Roman´s culture is one of the most important; because it brought with it a lot of
things that today we appreciate. Investigators said that Rome were introducing culture values little by little in their empire, for example, their official idiom was the Latin, and after that many modern languages came from it, like: French, Italian and Spanish, and this is a big deal. What about Literature? In (100-43 B.C) Julio César wrote about history of Rome, he wrote Galias’ War. Books that historiographers take in to account and really appreciate for all the History it has, or Plauto that wrote about comedies on that time. But the most significant of this, is the architecture. Huge structures were made by them, and until now it give us a lot to talk about, whether for its beauty or history, structures like The Rome Coliseum, Palaces, Circus and other type of constructions. One curiosity is that one of their hobbies in that time was, went to the public bathrooms, that there were pools with different temperatures and it was so popular. made by them, and until now it give us a lot to talk about, whether for its beauty or history, structures like The Rome Coliseum, Palaces, Circus and other type of constructions. One curiosity is that one of their hobbies in that time was, went to the public bathrooms, that there were pools with different temperatures and it was so popular.

Asian culture is not too different form the others, although it can be mentioned that is the continent with the most population, is one the principal alimentary producer on the world. One culture on this region is the Hindu; it is characterized for its religion and art. In this field, stand out the Brahmanism and Buddhism. In The first one, people thought that their souls were immortal, also if the person had lived a worthy life, they could reincarnate in other human or animal. On contrary, Buddhism said that illness, pain, old age and dead are inevitable, so for their souls was good to be positive, help others, love other people and other qualities. Today this religion is popular around the world. Some important constructions are the Khajuraho (950-1050) that is an old structure or the Taj Mahal that is newer (around 1631-1654). These structures are amazing.

Finally, is important remark that the cultures are not the same, all this were inspired in a different time in a determinate period. People of these places used to follow a leader that had different expectations. These cultures can be compared and some of their beliefs were similar, while others were completely different. The essential is that, thanks to these cultures and the people, today we have our own ideals and we have something in what believe orfollow. However, even though all this, nowadays people have been mixing customs, ideas and as a result, there is what we are today and what we do every day, and with this we can be identify and we can feel proud.

UNIT 3: Stories

Hello there.

Compound adjectives: this is a nice topic, because it allows us to put together two adjectives, for example:

  • Out class and
  • Grammar

To increase my level on these topics, I did some search.

This is a link to practice the past tenses:

This is a link to practice the compound adjectives:

For practice with the tenses, I did a story: (It was a homework)

And is important to know all these tenses, and also all the irregular verbs, compound adjectives to know that they are talking about.
